SOP for Master of Data Science

I think the kids who grew up in the 1990s were lucky because they were born at a very important time in history. Two different worlds could be seen growing up: one before the 2000s and one after. In the first one, technology was still developing, while in the second one, it was booming so much that the changes in technology in the last 20 years have been more important than those in the last 200. And since hardware development isn’t as important as it used to be, the focus is now on software, as we can see with the recent progress in AI and IoT. In this digital age, everyone is always using some technological device. This makes DATA, and when this unstructured data is processed and analyzed, we can make good strategic decisions that are based on good information. I want to grow my career in Data Science by enrolling in the graduate program at La Trobe University. This is because I want to be in charge of the business analysis field in Nepal in the future. With my wide range of work experiences and my engineering degree with a minor in math, I think I’m ready to take the graduate course in data science.

INTRODUCTION & EDUCATION BACKGROUND:

I was born on (Date of Birth) to (Name of Parent). Number is my passport number. The address where I live is Address,
In terms of my education, I graduated from School Name in Year with a grade point average of XX. Since I was very interested in science, I chose Science as my major at College Name when I was in high school. I graduated from high school in 2005 with a grade point average of XO. I wanted to get an international engineering degree, so I chose to do my undergraduate work in the United States (US). I went to Name of College. During my first semester at university, I was still getting used to the new way of life when the semester was over. When some of my friends decided to move to College Name, I went with them because I didn’t want to leave my comfort zone. So, after studying for a semester, I transferred to college. After taking general electives for 2 and a half years, I finally transferred to University, Location, where I got my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) (with a minor in mathematics) in Year with a cumulative GPA of X.X.

It took me 7 years to finish my bachelor’s degree. The trip that began in Year came to an end in Year. I felt the pain of taking a long time to finish college, but I didn’t give up hope. Most of my College credits didn’t transfer to University, so I had to start from scratch when I was an undergraduate at University at Location. I think school is important. I think getting a degree opens up a lot of doors for you in life. It also makes you feel good about yourself and gives you confidence. Because I believe in education, I wanted to join the Teach for Nepal Fellowship to encourage kids from rural villages to go to school (higher) despite the difficulties they might face.

After I got my bachelor’s degree, I looked for engineering jobs at different companies. I knew it would take some time to find a job. Also, it had been a long time since I had been back to Nepal since I moved to the US for college. I was also looking for opportunities in Nepal so I could come back and get engaged right away. Which, now that I think about it, was a great chance for me to go back to Nepal and help the community by joining a movement called “Name.” So, in the year, I went back to Nepal. I applied for the Fellowship, and after two months of training at the school, I started it in Year. I teach math to students in grades 6 through 10 at a public school called School Name. The length of the Fellowship was two years. The year was when I finished my Fellowship.

I wanted to be close to my family after the Fellowship. So, I moved back to Location, which is where I grew up. I was given the chance to work at Company Name. After the big earthquake in Nepal a year ago, the business was started as a start-up that offered housing services. They needed an Operations Manager to oversee everything and then set up a structure to make day-to-day tasks easier. I was the Operations Manager at Company Name from Date until Date.

At the moment, I work as a Site Engineer for Company through Sanchaya Staffing. In Date, I joined Company.

With the different jobs I’ve had, I could see how important data could be for making assumptions and making judgments. During my time as a Teach for Nepal Fellow, I gave every class a weekly quiz, and the grades were kept in Excel. I looked at the sheet every month to figure out which students I should pay more attention to, how to group students for group work, and how to arrange seats so that students could learn more. The data on each student’s attendance also showed how his or her grade was linked to how often he or she came to class. Aside from that, it also helped me think about how teachers can communicate well with the whole class.

As an Operations Manager for Company Name, I could tell how relevant the data was by looking at the materials in the warehouse, how they were delivered to the project sites, and how much labor was needed for the project. This gave me a clear picture of which sites to work on and for how long, as well as ways to save money on getting materials from the warehouse to the different sites.

In the same way, when we worked for Company, we had to carefully plan our work on different sites based on how far away each site was from the main office. We also had to check on the progress of subcontractors’ work on different sites and let our managers know so that the work could be done by the deadline. We set up a tracking system in Excel to keep track of each site’s progress. This helped us plan our work with the subcontractor and finish the job by the deadline.

Working in different fields has shown me how well data can be used to plan, track, predict, and make assumptions. This has made me want to learn more about the tools and methods for analyzing data, which is also why I want to take Data Science.

On Year, I got married. Name is the name of my partner. She graduated from School Name with a total grade point average of XX% on Date and from high school with a total grade point average of XX Date. After high school, she took a course in web design and has been working for Company Name as a web designer for the past three years. After we got married and talked about our hopes and dreams, we decided it was time for me to go to graduate school (in Data Science). She is also applying as a dependent on my application. The number on her passport is Number. I’m applying to the graduate program in Australia because she helped me and pushed me to do so. When you are alone and sad in a foreign country, which can happen sometimes, it can be pretty depressing, so I need my wife to share my days with. She has never been abroad before, so this will be a good chance for her to learn about different cultures, communities, people, food, and ways of life.

My parents will pay for everything I need while I study and live in Australia with my wife. This includes my school fees, travel costs, and our living costs. My family has a lot of money and is very helpful when it comes to school. So, my parents have agreed to pay for everything we need while we’re in Australia.

WHY NOT NEPAL FOR MY FURTHER STUDIES:

Before I decided to go to graduate school abroad, I did some research to see if there were any universities or colleges in Nepal that offered graduate programs in Data Science. In Nepal, no university or college has a specific graduate program for Data Science, but most colleges have some Data Science courses as part of their Engineering or IT graduate programs. Islington College, for example, has MSc. IT and Applied Security is a graduate-level course with modules on “Programming for Data Analytics,” “Data Warehousing and Big Data,” and “Data Analysis and Visualization.” In the same way, Kathmandu University offers a master’s in “Computer Science and Engineering.” Some of the courses in this program, like “Database Management System,” “Data Mining,” “Machine Learning,” and “Computer Simulation and Modeling,” are optional and not required. The IT and engineering topics in these graduate programs would cover a lot of ground.

So, after doing a lot of research and talking with family, I’ve decided to apply for a master’s program abroad, since there are no colleges or universities in Nepal that offer graduate programs in Data Science.
WHY NO OTHER COUNTRIES:

If you want to study abroad and get a degree, you should look at the best places for international students. Study portals say that the US, the UK, and Australia are the top three places for international students to go.

I went to college in the US and got my bachelor’s degree in engineering. When it comes to universities with similar rankings, the cost of a graduate program in the US is more than in Australia. For example, the tuition fees at La Trobe University, where I’m applying, are A$ 35,400 per year, while the tuition fees for the graduate program at University of Colorado Denver in the US are $ 31,640 per year (non-resident tuition), which is more than La Trobe when the Australian dollar is compared to the US dollar. Both of these schools are ranked 397th in the world by Global. In the US, you need to take the GRE or GMAT to get into a graduate program, but in Australia, there is no such requirement. Australia has a very low crime rate compared to the United States. This makes it a safe place to learn.

The one-year course length is the main reason I don’t want to apply to a graduate program in the UK. Even though it saves a year of time and money, my long-term plan is to go back to Nepal, and the Nepal Education Board only accepts Master’s programs that last two years. Taking into account the current exchange rate between Nepal and the UK and Australia, tuition and living costs in the UK are also higher than in Australia.

In addition to the cost of living and tuition, many universities in Australia offer scholarships to international students. This makes it easier for their sponsors to pay for their education.

WHY I CHOOSE TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA

Many international students choose to study in Australia because it has a great education system that is carefully regulated by the government to keep the high standards, friendly and laid-back culture, and high standard of living. Australian education has become one of the most sought after in the world as more and more people try to get the skills they need to compete in a global market. Here, I will get teaching that is well-known all over the world, along with one of the best student support systems and a great place to live. People from all over the world have moved to Australia. I will meet people from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. Australia is a place where new ideas are made. The black box flight recorder, the heart pacemaker, ultrasound, the flu vaccine, the bionic ear, wireless internet, Google Maps, and spray-on skin for burn victims were all made by Australian scientists. More about the education system in Australia is given below:

Compared to other countries, the Australian education system puts more emphasis on independent study, which will help me develop my critical thinking, communication, personality, and decision-making skills.
Australian teachers try to figure out if their students are learning. If they aren’t, they try a different way to teach and make it easier.
Australia’s education providers care more about how students learn. They offer peer support and help students find a good balance between school, sports, and other activities.
The most important thing is that Australian schools offer a wide range of courses and degrees, making it easy for international students to find the fields they want to study.
The curriculum has been changed to fit the current situation.
In Australia, there are rules and regulations that make it easier for international students to study there. Some of them are the Education Service for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act, the national code of practice for providers of education and training to overseas students, and the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students.
Student (CRICOS) and the Tuition Protection Service (TPS). Australia is different from the rest of the world because it has rules and a system that are different from the rest of the world. The learning and studying process is multi-cultural and global, so when I finish my studies I will be able to work anywhere in the world, including my home country.

WHY UNIVERSITY NAME:

When I decided to get my Master’s in Data Science in Australia, I looked into a few universities. Some of them were Western Sydney University, Monash University, La Trobe University, and the University of Technology in Sydney. When I looked into these schools, I looked at their tuition costs, rankings, and ability to get jobs.

Name of the school Cost of tuition in 2019 Rank* (2019)
Employability*

(2019)

La Trobe University paid $35,400 for 397 251-300
Monash University is paying A$41,400.59.59.
Western Sydney University spent $31,680 on 498, 301, and 500
The University of Technology in Sydney cost A$37,650 and had 160 students.
*The ranking and ratings for how likely a school is to get a job came from www.topuniversities.com.

I’ve decided to go to University for my graduate studies after giving it a lot of thought. Even though Western Sydney University is a little bit cheaper than La Trobe University, La Trobe is ranked higher and graduates are more likely to find jobs after graduation. Monash University is a little bit pricey for me.

Aside from the price of tuition, I’m also excited about how Data Science courses are set up at University. In addition to the core 90 credits, students can choose a specialization and choose to do a thesis, an internship, or industry-based learning as part of the curriculum. When we finish the course, this work experience will be very helpful.

In the 2017 QILT Employer Satisfaction Survey, La Trobe graduates were ranked eighth in the country for overall satisfaction, which is 86.6 percent higher than Monash University (84.4), University of Technology Sydney (81.8), and Western Sydney University. This shows that employers think highly of La Trobe (85.8). La Trobe University also has a great relationship with business. This gives us a better place to learn, more internship opportunities, and more experience with the job market before we graduate.

Excellence Award at La Trobe University College

I’ve also been nominated for a University Excellence Scholarship from the College of Science, Health, and Engineering. This scholarship will pay for 25% of my Master of Data Science tuition fees for the duration of my studies, which start on Date.

There are only a certain number of scholarships available, so they are given to the first people who apply. To get the scholarship and accept it, I have to:

Meet all of the conditions (if any) listed in my Letter of Offer.
Accept my offer by paying the full acceptance deposit listed on my Letter of Offer and sending back my Offer Acceptance Form for International Students with the Scholarship Details Section filled out.
Start class at university in the second semester of 2019.
To study Data Science as a graduate program at a university, you need an Australian Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent, as well as an academic IELTS score of at least X.X overall and at least X.X in each band.

I meet this requirement because I have a degree in engineering (electrical with a minor in math) and an overall IELTS score of X, with a minimum score of X in each band.

To graduate from University Name as a Data Scientist, we have to earn 240 credits, 90 of which come from Core Subjects and the other 150 from one of three specializations. One can focus on Bioinformatics, Big Data and Cloud Computing, or Analytical Science. Each specialization consists of 105 credits (15 credits per course) of specially designed classes, and 45 credits can be chosen from Statistics Thesis, Computer Science Thesis, and Industry-based Learning Pathway-1,2, or 3.

WHY I HAVE CHOSEN MASTER OF DATA SCIENCE:

Data Science is a program with many different parts. Data Scientist doesn’t have a niche market. Almost every field, like energy, real estate, cars, banking, and finance, needs data scientists. Why? Because data drives decisions, they can be directly involved in making cost-saving strategic decisions based on data or used to develop advanced data-driven analytics solutions in AI (Artificial Intelligence). As I said above, my own varied professional experiences taught me how important data are for analysis and forecasting.

I became interested in Data Science when I saw how Google Chrome uses the user’s search query (data) to customize the information that is shown in the search engine. This is a great example of how data analysis works. Youtube is the same way. I really want to learn about the different tools and methods that Data Scientists use, and since I have a background in engineering (with a minor in math), I have the skills for the program. Plus, when I study Data Science, I don’t have to stick to one area of business. I can work for any company that needs solutions that make sense and are backed up by data.

Also, Deloitte Access Economics (2017) says, “The data science workforce is expected to grow faster than the Australian labor force as a whole, which is expected to grow by 1.5% per year on average over the next five years.”

MY FUTURE PLAN:

In the long run, I’d like to start my own consulting firm in Nepal that helps both private and public sectors with market research and analysis, market trends and opportunities, and growth strategies. To do that, I need to build my credibility and expertise. Before I start my own consulting firm, I’d like to work in the field for at least 5–7 years.

A graduate in Data Science can work under a number of different names, such as viz. as an Analytics Manager/Engineer, Business Analyst, Data Analyst/Engineer, Business Intelligence Engineer/Architect, or Big Data Engineer, to name a few. I want to work in Australia under the 485 Skilled Graduate Temporary Visa after I graduate to get work experience in a different country. After that, I’d like to go back to Nepal and work for companies like Frost and Sullivan Nepal, NCell, Verscend Technologies, Huawei Nepal, Unilever Nepal, Dabur Nepal, and Chaudhary Group. Big companies in Nepal are starting to hire Data Scientists or hire consulting firms to look at market trends and analyze them so they can better understand the market and make decisions based on that information. Ncell has started up its own Market Research and Analytics team.

ANALYSIS OF COSTS AND BENEFITS:

With a Master of Data Science degree from an Australian university, I can get a job with a good company and start making between NPR 80,000 and NPR 100,000 every month in my home country. As I work hard and gain experience in related fields, I can raise my salary to more than NPR 150,000 per month. So, my job would help me earn back the cost of my Master of Data Science degree in 5 to 6 years. Also, I’ll have all the experience I need to get a government job as a senior data analyst, which will be good for my future.

MY FAMILY TIES AND FINANCIAL SITUATION:

My family is small and close-knit. My single mother, Mother-in-Law, and Father-in-Law have always supported and encouraged me in my choices about college. It’s very important for me to go back to her so I can be with my family, and it’s my turn to thank them for all their help. My finances are in a very good place. In addition to money, my family also owns property in the center of Biratnagar, the value of which goes up every year. As the only son, I also have to take care of our property. This shows how important it is for me to go back to the country where I was born.

As a foreign student in Australia, I must follow the following conditions of my visa:

I have to take a course full time, and I have to be there 80% of the time.
I need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the whole time I’m in school.
I can’t switch courses or teachers for 6 months.
I must meet the criteria for a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE).
I can’t start getting paid work before my class starts.
When I’m in school, I can’t work more than 40 hours every two weeks.
I’d like to follow all these rules.
DECLARATION:

I certify that the above information, which was given to support my student visa application and help me show that I meet DIBP’s GS and GTE compliance requirements, was written in my own words and handwriting and is true and correct.

I know that if any wrong, misleading, or fake information is found in this SOP, my application for a student visa will be turned down.

My family ties and financial situation
