If you want to go to college in Australia, you need to be able to speak English well enough. This is also needed when applying for a student visa. IELTS, TOEFL, CAE, and PTE are some of the most important tests that the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will accept for visa purposes.

Tests of English to Study in Australia

Universities and colleges set their English language requirements for getting into classes, and the score needed to get into a course may be different than the score required to get a visa. On the other hand, IELTS is the most common English language test in Australia and the primary test for students who want to attend school in Australia. (Students should check what they need to do to get into the school of their choice.) Here is an overview of the different tests the Department of Education, Australian Government, will accept.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

There are more than 35 countries where the IELTS Australia test is given. The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations work together to run IELTS (Cambridge ESOL). It is given in over 130 countries at over 800 test centers and locations.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Scores on the TOEFL are accepted for both admissions and getting a visa. It is one of the tests that universities, agencies, and other institutions worldwide accept and trust the most. TOEFL test content is 100% academic. The TOEFL iBTTM is given 30–40 times yearly at thousands of secure Internet-based test sites worldwide. The TOEFL Paper-based Test, or TOEFL PBT, is available where the Internet-based test is not. Six times a year, it is given.

PTE Academic (Pearson English Test)

More than 150 institutions in Australia, including more than 80% of TAFEs, now accept the PTE Academic. It can also be used to get a student visa from DIAC. Nepal’s students in 3 cities (Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan) can take the test. However, people who take the test should check the score requirements with DIAC and the schools they want to attend.

If your English language score isn’t good enough, you can take an English language course to prepare for more schooling. Almost every university in Australia has an English language center on campus or works with English language colleges.

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Certificates

Students can now use Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) scores to show they have the English language skills they need to do well in school. It can also be used to apply for a visa with the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Since Cambridge ESOL also gives the test, its score is the same as an IELTS score, and DIAC accepts this.
